The Amherst College Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is hosting a Liberal Arts Collaborative for Digital Innovation (LACOL) conference exploring the following questions:

  • What kinds of leaders does our world need?
  • How do we think about leadership and power while attempting to address inequity in our educational environments?
  • Are there models of leadership that we want to cultivate in our students that are not at odds with the egalitarian ideals of liberal arts education?
  • If such leadership is possible, then what are the pedagogical and classroom management strategies that foster this kind of leadership?
  • How do we teach and encourage the development of leadership strategies that are transferable to other contexts?
  • What are the institutional structures that support faculty and departments investing in implementing these strategies?

The conference is co-hosted by LACOL and three Amherst College offices: the Center for Teaching and Learning, Academic Technology Services, and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion. The program consists of facilitated cross-institutional discussions on the theme, presentations from two Amherst College “students-as-partners” programs, a presentation from the Sensemaker team, and a workshop by Dr. Bryan Dewsbury (University of Rhode Island).  Our goals for the day include the following:

  • To provide opportunities for cross-institutional conversations to enrich our understanding and support of student development at our respective institutions.
  • To present case-studies in order to demonstrate student development models in action including the planning, implementation and assessment of these models
  • To build community across institutions invested in fostering inclusive student development
  • To provide a venue to begin developing institution-specific action plans
